Our health services

Dr Melanie Burkhardt principal Clinical Psychologist at Wellstrong.

Mel has a special interest in the behavioural management of diabetes and metabolic conditions, which she developed working as a Senior Clinical Psychologist and member of the multidisciplinary team, in the Department of Endocrinology at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals.

She also has extensive experience in assisting clients with cancer, rheumatological conditions, women’s health issues, limb amputations, and pain, providing behavioural therapy as an adjunct to medical treatments.

Mel remains an active clinical researcher, and is involved in teaching and training allied health professionals in both public and private health sectors. She is an AHPRA Psychology board approved supervisor, and offers clinical supervision specifically to psychologists and diabetes health professionals who are keen to develop their skills and interest in the behavioural management of diabetes.

Mel takes a functional, practical ‘here and now’ approach to therapy and places strong emphasis on teaching behavioural self-management to assist clients in optimising their personal health behaviours including physical activity, dietary behaviour change and optimal medical management.

We assist our clients to navigate challenges when faced with major life changes including retirement, bereavement, relationship breakdowns, loss of functioning, ability and/or independence, and living with the burden of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, chronic fatigue, persistent pain, and cancer.

Psychological therapy may be of assistance to you if you wish to improve or optimise your wellbeing and health by exploring and learning adaptive ways of coping and self-managing behaviour for lasting change.

It can also assist in managing persistent low mood, anxiety and associated difficulties.

Our clients have the option of utilising psychological therapy only or a multidisciplinary team approach to leverage lifestyle changes to include physical activity and nutrition.
